The ionic order is one of the five classical column orders. It was developed in the 6th century in Ionia. In the hierarchy of orders it stands between the Doric and the Corinthian order. However, the differences are as follows: The column stands on a base below the column. The column itself is slimmer and less tapered. The so-called entasis (swelling of the column) is therefore less pronounced. This form also makes it associated with a woman's body. Therefore churches with female patron saints often use ionic columns.
