Sedimentary rocks consisting of the minerals calcite and aragonite. The majority of all limestones are biogenic, but there are also chemically precipitated and clastic limestones. Limestone is one of the most important raw materials for the building materials industry. It is processed in lime mills and converted into quicklime. It is also ground and mixed with calcareous materials to produce cement, which is the binding agent for the production of concrete.
